International
School of English DVD Course
The International School of English DVD Course was originally developed
for the primary purpose of connecting with people, making meaningful
relationships, and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. Naturally,
teaching the students the English language is a major component
of the course, too. And it’s not just conversational English.
It is a rigorous academic course for serious students
age 12 to adult.
• Effective Outreach Resource
Anyone that has been involved in cross-cultural missions for
any reasonable amount of time knows the value of offering instruction
in the English language as a means to make contacts and develop genuine
relationships. Now with the teaching already done, the paraprofessional
simply needs to insert the DVD for each class session and facilitate
the learning process. In so doing, the paraprofessional has the opportunity
to relate personally to each student in the class. What a great outreach
tool with minimal work on the part of the paraprofessional (missionary,
national worker…)! All the lesson plans and preparations have
already been completed!
• Christ-honoring Character Qualities
Infused within the instructional content of the ISE DVD Course are
specific character qualities that not only reflect positive citizenship
values but bring honor to Christ.
These include honesty (i.e. cheating, copying), integrity, responsibility,
work ethic (following directions, staying on task, doing homework/seatwork,
studying for tests), resourcefulness, diligence, perseverance, patience, attentiveness,
self-control, neatness, orderliness, obedience, tolerance and acceptance
for all people and stations in life and more.
•
Practical Gift of Love in Jesus’ Name
Providing for the felt needs of people is a genuine gift of love
in Jesus’ name. “And the King will answer and say
to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did
it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’" (Matthew
25:40) Jesus speaks of those who are hungry, thirsty, naked,
sick, imprisoned – referring to those who are in need.
Although the learning of English is not specifically in the same
category,
it nonetheless clearly meets a felt need in the lives of the
students.
• Viable Development Project
For some, especially in developing countries, another key need is
to provide them with some means of sustainable income. The
ISE DVD Course can be used as a sound small business enterprise. Start a
school, charge a nominal tuition fee and/or book fee, train
up a Christian national worker and hire him/her to serve as the paraprofessional!
It works!
This concept was initiated in the cross-cultural setting where
the ISE DVD Course was born. Bless a national Christian worker!
• Flexible Course Schedule
The ISE DVD Course is designed to fit most every need in cross-cultural
settings. Several options are possible. You may offer classes
from two to five days a week, for a six to nine month period of time.
We suggest a three-day a week schedule for optimum learning. This
allows
for national holiday breaks without interruption to the learning process
and for students to let the instructional content “sink
in” before
progressing to the next class session. But whatever schedule
you choose, the course will work with you.
• Field-tested and Proven ESL Curriculum
Gary and Kathryn Opfer, as veteran missionaries for more than 23 years, have
extensive experience in cross-cultural settings in many
different countries with several different religious groups. Their hands-on
involvement in developing, adapting, and refining the instructional content
of the ISE
DVD
program is
represented
in all the lesson planning, preparations and class sessions.
And with the exclusive use of the Scott Foresman English curriculum,
the results will be most rewarding!
• Secular English Course, Use Anywhere, Even In Closed
Countries
The ISE DVD Course is designed to be used in any country with any
people group. As a secular English course, it can go
anywhere, even in closed countries. However, certain themes in the curriculum
that are taught as factual and historical information by the DVD
teacher can be effectively used as a springboard for the paraprofessional
to expound upon and consequently share the message of
God’s
love. This can be done at the discretion of the paraprofessional,
with whatever
methodology he/she chooses and at the time they feel
it is most appropriate. Again, flexibility is a key component
of the course.
• Incorporates SMART Board Technology
From the manufacturer: “…the SMART Board interactive
whiteboard…helps energize presentations and motivate learners.
In 1991, it was the world’s first interactive whiteboard. Today,
it is the world’s leading interactive whiteboard. Combining
the simplicity of a whiteboard with the power of a computer, the
SMART Board interactive whiteboard engages students and audiences
around the world.”
All PAUSE, TEST, Answer, and Instructional “slides” are
presented via the SMART Board interactive whiteboard.
Watch the “board” come
alive with highlights, flowers, stars, happy faces,
arrows, underlining, drawing, diagrams, hidden answers,
matching, multiple choice and
more throughout the DVD teaching sessions.
• Comprehensive English Program
The Scott Foresman English curriculum “presents communication
skills—listening, speaking, reading, writing—together
with functions, notions, and grammar…with the

Curriculum
The International School of English DVD Course uses
the Scott
Foresman English curriculum exclusively. We believe it’s the
best ESL curriculum on the market today! The ISE DVD Course
is available for serious and motivated non-English speaking students
age 12 to adult.
Scott Foresman English is a theme-based, integrated skills series
ESL curriculum.
Specific Features: A syllabus integrated with
communication skills that include reading,
writing, listening, and speaking.
Thematic units teach English through a variety
of high-interest topics and content material.
Students become involved participants through a learner-centered
approach incorporated into every lesson by relying on their
prior knowledge of the topics or themes. Students are then
encouraged
to communicate their personal experiences, ideas, and opinions
using
the English skills they have learned.
Activities such as classifying, sequencing, making inferences,
and drawing conclusions are utilized for the development
of critical or higher level thinking skills. This process
assists
students
in
learning at an optimum level and helps them retain the
information they’ve learned for a longer period of time.
Specific learning strategies are also employed
in order for students to take responsibility for their own progress
and
become competent
as independent language learners. These strategies include
putting prior knowledge to use in each unit of study,
looking for key
words or phrases through scanning techniques, skimming
conversations and stories to locate main ideas, and,
in turn, understand
the
meaning
from the context.
The way in which the grammar sections (boxes) and subsequent
practice exercises are presented permit the students
to concentrate on form,
meaning, and use.
Every three units review sections are introduced to
aid the students in the recall of important material
and
re-establish grammar
concepts and acquired vocabulary.
• Student Book
The In Contact 1 Student Book contains twelve thematic
units. The Student Books are highly graphic with colored
pictures designed to engage the students’ interest and
prepare them for the accompanying content, be it conversation,
story, puzzle, matching, or game.
• Workbook
The In Contact 1 Workbook serves as a companion book to the Student
Book. It offers practice exercises and review
activities of vocabulary and grammar. It also includes additional
interactive speaking
exercises and opportunities to improve ear-training
and listening skills.
The students are also provided a “Check Your Knowledge” page
for individual assessment at the end of each unit. Not only does
this reinforce their knowledge of material learned but enables them
to have a more accurate understanding of their progress in the course,
unit by unit.
• Audio Program
The Student Book and Workbook also indicate audio program exercises
with a headphones symbol. These CD sections
utilize the Audio CD set for the In Contact 1 course. They include
Warm-Up, Vocabulary review, Listening/Ear-training exercises,
and
Pronunciation sections.
